Projects on carcinogens in grilled chicken, improving treatment of ovarian cancer and reducing reliance on asthma treatment won

google-science-fair-2011In December, last year, Google announced a spectacular contest for budding scientists around the globe and named it Google Science Fair 2011.

In order to bring intelligent, smart and obsessive scientists into the limelight Google along with Lego, National Geographic, CERN and Scientific American came together to host the biggest science fair in the world where students had the option to prepare a detailed project from variety of sections of the world which included Physics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Robotics, Biology etc..

About 7500 projects were submitted and out of those 7500 project only 15 made it to the finals.

The projects were hilarious, I mean who could have guess that kids ranging from age 13 to 18 could cater the needs of our world and create projects to tackle the problems of today. Have a look at all the projects by clicking on [this] link.

There were 3 categories and 5 projects in each category made it to the finals.

The Results

It must have been a pretty nervous week for all of the contestants because the judges were battling it out amongst themselves to decide which 3 among the 15 finalists should be awarded with top 3 positions.

It is natural for the judges (check them out by clicking on [this] link) to have favorites and that would have turned on a lot of debates in selecting the final winners of this hilarious science competition.

There were loads of prizes on stake, all the 15 finalists got a chance to visit Google HQ and most exquisite scientific location in the world.

Okay, so finally, let me tell you who won and something about their projects.

The grand prize of Google Science Fair 2011 went to Shree Bose (USA, 17-18 age category) who made a project improving treatment of ovarian cancer, following accumulated resistance to chemotherapy drugs.

About Shree Bose’s Project

It begins with proliferation of mutated cells and then further expands to other parts of the body. Her project dealt with AMPK and Cisplatin resistance in treatment of Ovarian Cancer.

She has been doing projects on drug resistance on plants since a long time has won in various science competitions like Fort Worth Regional Science and Engineering Fair and Exxonmobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair.

Naomi Shah won in 15-16 year old category with her project on reducing reliance on asthma treatment, you can have a look at her project [here] and Lauren Hodge won in the 13-14 year category with her project on mutagenic and carcinogenic compounds found in grilled chicken, you can read her observations [here].

On the whole Google Science Fair 2011 was huge success, it gave thinkers and dreamers around the world a platform to show their discoveries in the form of interesting projects. I really appreciate the idea of Google approaching the kids who have unlimited imagination to solve the problems of the real world in form of projects.

I just hope this sort of stuff happens every year. Smile
