KIT, Germany breaks its own record by transferring 26 billion bits of data
Information Technology Sector is expanding, India being one of the biggest IT hubs in the world but something more interesting happened a month ago. A Technical College in Germany did an astonishing experiment by transferring a massive 26 terabits (26 billion bits) of data in a single second which was projected across a single laser beam across 50 km.
This was world’s biggest feat in data transfer performed by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Germany. With this experiment, they also broke their own record set in 2010 of transferring 10 terabits (10 billion bits) per second.
KIT scientists, led by Prof. Leuthold attribute this experiment to a new data process that they have developed. This new technology of data transfer is termed opto-electric decoding method as reported by Nature Photonics journal.

The method is purely based on calculation at highest data rates such that it can broken into smaller bit rates and processed electrically.
“A few years ago, data rates of 26 terabits per second were deemed utopian even for systems with many lasers. And there would not have been any applications. The challenge was to increase the process speed not only by a factor of 1,000, but by a factor of nearly a million for data processing at 26 terabits per second,” ~ Prof. Leuthold, HOD Institute of Photonics and Quantum Electronics and the Institute of Microstructure Technology at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Germany.
“Our result shows that physical limits are not yet exceeded even at extremely high data rates,” he added explaining the constantly growing data transferred every single day on internet.
“With 26 terabits per second, it would have been possible to transmit up to 400 million telephone calls at the same time. Nobody needed this at that time. Today, the situation is different,” Leuthold added.
It is definitely a potentially useful scientific achievement, the faster the date travels, less time consuming it would be to send high amounts of information over large distance or even in smaller areas. It could be very useful in space technology especially in transferring pictures of spatial object captured by probes.
