For those who haven’t study the history of Computers (I know, it was boring for me too!), Computers in their early days were huge. Even though they covered most of the space in a room, they were not even as powerful as the Smartphone which you and I are using these days.
In 1950, a 10-year old boy visited Michigan State University campus, entered the room-sized computer and lost the way out.
Read his story:-
In 1950, I was 10 years old, visiting the Michigan State University campus. The computer was on the ground floor, turned off, with the door open. It was perhaps half the size of a gym, with many rows of cabinets taller than me. I wandered up and down the rows looking at the vacuum tubes until I got bored. By then I couldn’t see the door, and didn’t remember how to get back out. I was literally “lost in the computer”. So I continued wandering, eventually found the open door back out, and left.
I knew, after studying history of computers in 11th grade that early age computers like ENIAC & UNIVAC emitted a lot of heat, needed lots of space & cooling but I never knew that they had openings to fit a 10-year old boy.
