Padfone + latest Android OS coming together late this year
ASUS today announced that their Tablet Pad plus Smartphone a.k.a. Padfone would be releasing by the end of this year, some time around Christmas. The company also revealed the operating system that would be used on Padfone and guess what, Padfone would run on Android OS v2.4/4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)!
Alex Sun, chief of Asustek’s personal mobile devices department said that they chose Ice Cream Sandwich over Honeycomb because it would give better user experience to Padfone, whether it is used as a Tablet PC or as a Smartphone.
Ice Cream Sandwich Android Operating System has not been launched yet, it is expected to get released by the end of October and as I said before, it has been developed so as to match the requirements a developer needs to install it on a Tablet PC and Smartphone both.
Well, Padfone is quite a unique gadget, it comprises of a 10.1” display shell and a 4.3” loaded Smartphone. The Shell can’t work on its own and therefore when the Smartphone is inserted into the shell, the display of Smartphone is transferred to the 10.1” display of the shell thus making it usable like a Tablet PC. Also, the dock, as you may call the shell has an inbuilt battery which gives it a extended battery supports of about 8 hours (that’s a great feature).
Asus has also said something about their plans for the next generation of Padfone, the gadget would sport 3D graphics and LTE connectivity (seriously, is this what they are planning to add in the next generation of Padfone?) and would come into market during the first half, next year.
By 2012, the next generation of Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Motorola Xoom, Dell Streak and all other major Tablets would be set to get released. Be it Padfone 1 or Padfone 2, both are going to face serious competition from the Tablets that I have mentioned internationally, although I am not sure about Asian markets.
