Lake Minneola School in Florida switches from Textbooks to iPad

$700,000 spent to purchase 1750 iPads for Kids in Florida

The future of Education can’t be separated from Technology, a school named Lake Minneola in Florida have integrated Apple’s Iconic Tablet PC in their school instead of Textbooks. When the kids are going to return to school, next month, they would be welcomed by a brand new Apple iPad for home and school use.

The school has invested around $700,000 to purchase these Tablets for its students. iPad would be come pre-loaded with Textbooks in digital format along with several educational apps. Also, this version of iPad would be a locked one, which means that students won’t be able to install apps that are not appropriate for school. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to play Angry Birds in the middle of a boring history lesson.

“Students learn differently now because of the technology,” said Kathy Halbig, innovative learning manager for the Lake school district who is overseeing the project. “Students are used to having multiple sources and being able to have more social collaboration in their learning process rather than just doing it sitting quietly and reading.” “Rather than have a child have five tools on his or her desk they’ve got one tool that will function as the textbook, the Slate, the Internet access, note taker, calendar,” she said.

Anyways, the school teachers have already begun to plan out how they are going to give lectures using iPad. The iPad would also be provided with a rugged carrying case to survive the rough school life.

I think it is a good idea to incorporate technology as a teaching aid, at least now they would be able to see the structure of various organic compounds in three-dimensions or understand how the universe works, NASA’s universe app would be put to great use there. I don’t think the books can completely be eliminated, I hope they don’t replace School’s library with a room containing a single iPad.
