$35 Indian Tablet PC: Sakshat, set to launch this month; runs Android

This post is especially for those who have commented on the $35 Tablet blog post that I wrote a long time back. People have shown a great deal of interest in Sakshat, the $35 Android Tablet that would be launched in Indian Market for “everyone” this month.

It has been almost 2 years when India’s HRD Minister who is also responsible for the “absurd IIT entrance issue” revealed that they would soon be launching the cheapest Tablet PC for Indian students at just Rs. 1,500 ($35). That “soon” is confirmed to be October 5th.

Earlier Sakshat was supposed to be built by HCL but they couldn’t manage Tablet Parts at such a cheap price so Indian Govt. switched to some other manufacturer and this took them an extra 8-9 months to deliver what they had promised.

In a function, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said,

“The computer will be launched next month. This is not just a dream, it is a reality.”

The cheapest of Android Tablets available in market cost around Rs. 8,000 so if Indian Govt. is launching an Android Tab for just Rs. 1,500 it means that they would used a cheaper quality of hardware in manufacturing it. I am not really going to use it for daily purposes but I am truly excited to check it out. I want to just give it a test run and see what special it has in store for a techie.

I feel Sakshat is not a mainstream gadgets, it is developed for a purpose and that is what is most important characteristic about it. If it has a 256K RAM and can run Internet nicely, then it is much better than a Google Chromebook, that’s what I feel.

Sakshat, could prove to be a miracle for people, especially students living in areas where there is not much of a infrastructure that could accelerate “learning via technology” sort of environment.

I hope Sakshat does good and I wish Kapil Sibal thinks very rigorously about removing flaws in current education system before introducing new things. By flaws, I mean real flaws, not what he did to engineering and medical entrance exams.

  1. Why do you seem so much discontented from whatever the Kapil sibal and committee proposed with regard to IIT entrances?

    • I feel it would decrease the quality of students getting into IIT. Rather than good students, good muggers would get a seat if Board exam results are considered.

      • They are going to conduct an aptitude test supplement the boards. The present scenario is just profoundly of coaching industry’s interest and no one else’s and at the same time school education is undermined which is quite integral. I feel the current system would have been successful had there been no coaching institutions around. Moreover such steps have been taken considering the depreciated quality of student over the years and don’t you worry things have yet not been finalized.

        • Bro, I sounded like you when I hadn’t joined coaching institutes but the truth is that not many teachers are well qualified to teach for an exam like the IIT JEE and those who do would never teach in the pay they get in a normal group tuition or schools, that’s why they move to coaching institutes which pay them better. You are studying to become a good citizen of our country, right? Once you attain excellence, you would aim to setup yourself financially so as to meet your needs. The best of the teachers end up in coaching institutes and that is the reason why joining coaching for competition exam preparation is so necessary.

        • Nitin, I don’t know which school you study in but I studied in a school where teacher’s knowledge and teaching methodology has gone obsolete and that’s the reason why I somewhat support the coaching system. It is a very confusing topic to debate on, whether there should be coaching or not and there isn’t any end to it. That’s what I feel.

          • First of all no offences. To your amazement I am 12th standard student and into coaching for about an year and a half. I don’t feel coaching institutions are differently abled in teaching rather they impart some extra bit of knowledge and tactics to solve certain kind of pet problems. Their teaching methodology isn’t pattern proof and they provide a channel to master the problems in various entrances through practice and learning. The fact is we are more faithful in teaching methodology at our coaching classes hence neglect the school, which in turn results in lack of focus of our teachers on us. I feel a better method to judge would be an aptitude test/ mental ability test which shall judge the ability of a student ruling out learning and practice.

Secondly, I don’t feel a 6 hr paper on a single day shall be fair enough to judge oneself, rather boards like examination pattern ( spread over days) is more instrumental for the cause. It would have been even better if certain percentage of score could be taken up to a cumulative total from each class beginning from class I. And ya of course it shall remain a debatable issue.

          • to supplement to this have a look at today’s times of india pg 1 , where Mr N.R. Murthy expresses his views!
