Google unveils their latest Chrome OS notebooks at I/O Conference
At Google I/O conference held in San Francisco recently, the company unveiled the details about its latest portable computing miracle after Android OS i.e. Chrome OS.
Google’s past has already shown us that Google measures success in terms of market penetration and stats about their products.
For example,
At the conference, Google was quick to flaunt that over 100 million Android devices have been activated, over 310 different Android devices are available in the market and more than 4.5 billion Android apps have been downloaded off Android Market till date.
These statistics certainly tell us two things, one that Google’s Android OS is a massively successful product and second, Google loves it!
Sundar Pichai, senior vice president of Chrome in an interview that the true success of the product doesn’t lay in the sales they make but the happiness they bring to the life of people.
His words were, “Our goal, our main criterion, is [that] I want really high user satisfaction amongst consumers, businesses, and schools, independent of our quantity. I want people who pick up and buy one to be very happy with their purchase.”
The brand is also limiting the sales of Chrome OS notebooks to internet stores only and the reason is, “Part of the reason it’s not in physical retail is our goal is not to push a lot of these,” Pichai said. “We want people to know what they’re buying. Online gives a check. In the physical world you might accidentally walk out with a Chromebook. I don’t want that to happen.”
This means that the company wants to limit the sale of Chrome OS to people who are really interested in buying a product like Chrome OS notebook. In my view, it could be a great marketing for Chrome OS notebooks because scarcity creates demand and since Google needs not to prove that they are trustworthy, success of Chrome OS notebooks in terms of sale is somewhat certain.
What’s in the Chrome OS Notebooks?
It is possible that in coming years, Chrome OS Notebook might run a traditional operating like Linux but at the moment applications on the system run within its Chrome browser.
Most of the applications available for use on Chrome OS Notebook are proper internet apps which are developed using Web Languages like JavaScript etc. Web interfaces like AppCache to store data, and WebGL to show hardware-accelerated 3D graphics.
Properly written apps would work when Chrome OS notebook is disconnected from internet but still cloud computing is mandatory.
If you are looking for a basic notebook for using internet, doing some basic office work and for Facebook, then Chrome OS notebooks are great for you.
Remember, you won’t be able to play many games on it but only the ones which have specially developed for it under the WebGL license as all games and apps would run in the browser itself. Check out Angry Birds Chrome Browser games if you want a sample of what I am talking about.
Along with that you would have to quit using Microsoft Office, iPhoto and other software which you might be using because Google Chrome OS notebook supports nothing of that sort but offers its own web apps like Google Docs, Picasa and loads of other web based software.
Pichai believes that it will take some time for it to be readily accepted by masses.
In my view, many would be interested in giving Google Chrome OS notebook a shot but still there are several people in the world who love their traditional laptop and cannot compromise on power.
“You build a great experience, and you continually improve it. A few people get on board. As long as you delight them, they serve as messengers. Then somebody else hears about it, it breaks out, you market it,” Pichai said. “You have to earn it step by step.”
Most of Google’s products have gained success in a slow and steady manner. If you look at Android and Chrome browser, when they were launched they had several important things missing but with time it has emerged out as a massively successful OS and amazingly fast web browser.
It is going to be very interesting to see how Google develops on the Chrome OS notebook and how readily it is accepted by the consumers. As of now, the Chrome OS notebook looks delicious at least for somebody like me who likes to keep distraction at bay while blogging.
